More than 400 specialists needed to work in CCU “SKIF”

18 June 2020

A preliminary manning table has been formed for CCU “SKIF”, including the staff and an estimated number of employees required for the operation of the Center. According to preliminary estimates, more than 400 employees are needed, first of all, physicists and engineers; they will be trained in Novosibirsk State Technical University (NSTU) and Novosibirsk State University (NSU). The general design contractor, the Central Design and Technology Institute (AO TSPTI, SC Rosatom), considers this information to design the buildings and facilities of CCU “SKIF”.

The architectural concept of CCU “SKIF” (design by AO TSPTI)

CCU “SKIF” on the basis of the source of synchrotron radiation (SR) of the generation 4+ and energy of 3 GeV is being constructed within the National Project “Science” on the territory of Koltsovo (Novosibirsk District) and is a flagship of the program of development of the Novosibirsk Science Center known as Akademgorodok 2.0. In its calculated user parameters the accelerating complex is second to none in the world.

According to the preliminary estimates of the experts, more than 400 employees will be needed for CCU “SKIF”, both of physical and engineering specializations.

“At this moment it is understood that after launching CCU “SKIF” about 400-500 employees will work in the Center, — said Dr. Igor Churkin, the deputy director and technical director of BINP. — The Center will require about 150 specialists working at the experimental stations of SR and developing new ones, as well as those working in the laboratory building; about 120 physicists and engineers operating the accelerating complex of the Center, and about 80 specialists of maintenance for the accelerating complex”. Igor Churkin noted that by 2028 according to the preliminary estimates about 300 specialists will be the external users of the experimental stations — this number of users will work at CCU “SKIF” every day.

The specialists of CCU “SKIF” will be trained in a number of organizations, including the Physical Engineering Department of NSTU (PED NSTU) and in the Novosibirsk State University at the Department of Physics (DP NSU) and Department of Natural Sciences (DNS NSU).

The chair of Electrophysical Installations and Accelerators in PED NSTU that includes the master’s programs in experimental physics, radiophysical methods of research, and the bachelor’s program in nuclear physics and nuclear technologies, traditionally trains the specialists for Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics. The chair trains the engineers, designers, constructors, technologists of engineering, power engineers, and other specialists in engineering for working in scientific laboratories, design-engineering department, engineering services and at the pilot manufactory of BINP. “We plan that NSTU will train various specialists (power engineers, constructors, electronic engineers, metrologists, etc.) who will participate in the project both at the stage of development of the accelerating complex and stations of SR and in the period of exploitation of CCU “SKIF”, for example, in maintenance of experimental stations” — added Igor Churkin.

NSU will participate actively in training the staff for CCU “SKIF”. “The chairs of DP NSU (accelerator physics, nuclear and particle physics, physicotechnical informatics, radiophysics, physical methods of solid-state research) prepare bachelors, masters, graduates, who are able to design the accelerating complex and experimental stations, to maintain their functioning and development, — said Dr. Prof. Sergei Tsybulya, senior staff scientist of Boreskov Institute of Catalysis, deputy dean of Department of Physics NSU. — The problems concerning the storage and analysis of big bodies of experimental data, the information safety, can be solved by the graduates of the Department of Information Technologies and Department of Mathematics and Mechanics. The new master’s program in physical methods in interdisciplinary research realized by DNS and DP NSU is aimed at training the highly qualified researchers able to formulate and solve the relevant tasks with the use of synchrotron methods in various fundamental and applied fields — physical and chemical materials science, biology, geology, archeology, etc., at the world level.” According to Tsybulya, these researchers include not only the future employees of CCU “SKIF” and the personnel of the experimental stations, but also those who work in various research centers and will join the ranks of the users of the stations, for whom the Center is being created.
