V International Conference “Catalysis for Renewable Resources: Fuel, Energy, Chemicals” took place on Crete

28 October 2019

In September, 2019, the V International Conference “Catalysis for Renewable Resources: Fuel, Energy, Chemicals” (CRS-5) was held on Crete. The conference was organized by Boreskov Institute of Catalysis along with Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, bringing together more than 100 participants from 28 countries.

The scientific scope of the conference was traditionally dedicated to the global problems of the role of catalysis in the regulation of balance of energy resources, reduction of dependence on the fossil fuels due to the use of the renewable energy resources, environment protection.

Conference opening. Left to right: Dr. Claude Mirodatos (IRCELYON, Lyon, France), Dr. Vadim Yakovlev (BIC SB RAS, Novosibirsk), Dr. Oleg Martyanov (BIC SB RAS, Novosibirsk), Dr. Eleni Heracleous (CPERI/CERTH, Thessaloniki, Greece).

A wide range of problems discussed during the scientific sessions concerned the deeply fundamental approaches to the deep and complex catalytic processing of the renewable resources as well as the realization of the research in industry. The problems of solving the engineering tasks sparked great interest, and a special attention was drawn to the presentations of Mikhail Antonov, Director of Direction of Oil Processing PAO “Gazprom neft”, and the head of a Crete’s large bioenergetics complex Yanis Petrokakis. All scientific sessions enjoyed a special active atmosphere, a great number of questions and emotional discussions. A lively reaction of the audience was triggered by the debates at the roundtable “Catalysis in dendrochemistry for valuable products”.

The final and, as usual, a most significant and interesting part of the program of CRS-5 was the visit to Technical Bioenergy Crete (TBC) plant. The enterprise specializes on the production of electric power, fuel, valuable chemicals by the deep processing of waste, vegetable stock, and the residuals of various industries.

Here’s how one of the participants of the conference, Dr. Vladimir Chesnokov describes his impression: “It was my first time at CRS. I liked the creative and friendly atmosphere reigning at scientific sessions as well as at the social events. The presentations of the leading world experts in the field of the catalytic processing of biomass, from both academic institutions and the large industrial companies, were quite impressive in their creativity and emotional intensity. The interesting discussions, debates and arguments that continued into the breaks were of great interest. A curious final point was the traditional CRS visit to the plant for producing electric energy, fuel, valuable chemicals from the renewable sources”.

Portugal was chosen as the site for the CRS-6 in 2021.
