Estimation of Molecular Composition

Gas Chromatography

Objects of analysis

Gaseous and liquid substances: organic and inorganic, polar and nonpolar, individual compounds and multi-component mixtures as well. It may be the products of chemical synthesis, petroleum products, environmental objects – air, water, gaseous mixtures containing in gas balloons and others.

Applications

Qualitative and quantitative analysis within a wide boiling temperature range of the compounds. The concentrations are determined in the range from 10-6 up to several decades per cent.

Additional possibilities

  • Preparation of the fillers for chromatographic columns for a preset task with an assigned order of components elution and required analysis time.
  • Development of chromatographic systems and the methods for GC-analysis.
  • Scientific consultation on the matters of sample preparation, qualitative and quantitative substance analysis.

Instrument facilities

There are available Hewlett-Packard, Perkin Elmer gas chromatographs, domestic “Tsvet” and “Kristall” chromatographs. We have at our disposal a wide set of sorbents and fixed liquid phases of various polarity as well.

Samples requirements

Volume of gaseous sample – not less than 5 l, liquid one – approximately 1 ml.

Capillary and Multicapillary Chromatography

Applications

For chromatographic separation of complex organic mixtures the efficiency of capillary columns is considerably higher than that of the packed ones. Retaining all the advantages of the capillary chromatography the multicapillary chromatography has considerably higher productivity and it is very useful for combinatorial chemistry, kinetics study and industrial chromatography.

Instrument facilities

Novel type of multicapillary chromatographic columns (MCC) developed at the Institute represents a package of a large quantity of capillaries with a small diameter. It allows to accelerate the substance separation by tens and hundreds times. Complex organic mixtures are analyzed for 10–60 s and it takes some seconds only for light hydrocarbons C1–C5 separation. On the basis of MCC the high performance express Echo devices for separation of organic compounds mixtures have been already developed and successfully operate.

Additional possibilities

BIC has considerable opportunity to prepare for a specific task and install at Customer’s chromatograph:

  • Glass capillary columns.
  • Glass multicapillary columns.
  • Thermal desorbents with cryo-focusing for concentration of admixtures from gas phase.

Chromato-Mass-Spectrometry

Objects of analysis

Liquids and solids representing the individual organic compounds and their mixtures as well.

Applications

Qualitative analysis of the molecular composition. The organic compounds with the molecular weight from 50 up to 450 and content not less than 0.1% of the main component are identified.

Instrument facilities

Varian “Saturn-2000” and VG 7070 HS chromato-mass-spectrometers. For mixture analysis their preliminary chromatographic separation is performed by means of packed and/or capillary columns. The results of mixture study are presented as chromatograms and a set of mass-spectra corresponding to each peak on the chromatogram. To describe mass-spectra it is possible to address to a searching system.

Samples requirements

It depends strongly on the sample of analysis, so formulated under discussion of the object analyzed.
